digital synths are fairly modern developments. before the digital age there was the analog age. all synths in the old days were made of analog electronic components - capacitors, resistors, vacuum tubes, etc. digital synths are, for the most part, chips which are designed to emulate analog synths.
organic is using real life things which are not necessarily meant to be instruments. for instance, the wail of a cat, the cry of a baby, the engine of a car, the sound of the wind. |

aha!
it seems unlikely that most of the folks in here are starting works from totally digital sources? no?

on the contrary i think a good number of the folks who make music and post and hang around here are working with primarily digital instruments and tools as it were, i had the impression that musique concrete described sounds recorded from every day "non-musical" sounds and the like then used to create a type of music? |

some of my songs are completely and entirely digital. all of them are digitized and resampled and reengineered digitally. but i do like to toy around with analog and organic sounds, i am generally a digital musician. |

interesting that you mention musique concrete and the tie to early industrial. it seems that many popular digital tools ( looping programs, sampler/sequencers ) are very applicable to extending the organic/musique concrete. of course, the borders between styles/labels are fuzzy.
coming from a highly improvisational background, i have been struggling with these tools, trying to find a space to call my own. out of the box, digital tools seem to prefer certain kinds of composition. "what is there between the steady beats of dance music and the complete wash out of new age?"
its a rhetorical question of course! my lack of familiarity with the tools is the real issue.
cheers!
