who cares? what is it good for?
seriously, what is your view here?

currently, i dont see much value in cd packaging...

the only times i buy a "cd" is if i see the band and have the money in my pocket, or i am looking for something used on ebay .

otherwise, i just want to buy the download.

maybe i feel differently about a dvd?

how about you?

yeh, i agree. its all the same rave flier looking shit. homemade stuff is cool, like cassettes in nylon pouches, 3 inch discs in tins, etc etc.

The packaging is obviously not as important as the music itself, but I think it has alot influence because it is what you touch and see before listening. It's like an appatizer before a meal. It gives an impression to the listener before they hear the music. For example, an artist can use this tool to present happy, sad, boring, trippy, or even violent images. These moods all invoke different mental responses, but share "leaving an impression" or "setting the stage" in common. Therefore I think the packaging is a valuable part of the composition.

As for the media itself, I prefer a cd to a download. In the past 12 months I have seriously bought over 100 cd's online. When they arrive I open them, encode them to my notebook computer so I can listen to them when im at home or work or transfer the music to my rio mp3 portable. Then I listen to the discs themselves in my car, and other places such as other people's cars, other people's houses, and for occasionally handing to a deejay. I also like having discs to pass to friends so they can give a listen. Lastly, the disc is a backup in case my hard drive crashes and I like that I didn't even have to burn a cd.

So that's my opinion on cd packaging and compact disc media. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

I like nontraditional packaging, once I bought a CD that came in a vacuum bag type case... it was done in a very cool way too. I also have this Cure cd in the shape of Robert Smith. Try that on a download.
Sometimes the artwork is just as cool as the music... besides that the packaging has some valuable info on it sometimes.
ANd what about multi media that you can't always encode, at least not in the same quality....
If you care about all that stuff anyways you'd know what I mean. I think you miss out on a whole lot of stuff when you don't buy an album.... I can see downloading MP3s when you want to try out music, but to just totally abandon buying the packaged product not just sticks it to the man but to the band as well, catch 22. Your fucking your brothers over.
Look at my picture. Yeah, I am flexible!

hmmm i guess it depends.how much you like the artist,if i liked an artist enough id definately want the whole cd sealed in a pacage for a number of reasons.1 the enhance cd stuff.2 the artwork/lyrics/book.3 the actual cd! and 4 the fact that you dont need to ruin anything on your computer downloading stuff!!!!
but when stuff comes out i like to download demos and junk from their site or whatever.
buying sealed cd's is allways best
(in my opinion)
I've overreached myself again....

Art comes in all forms, and not only that, but it comes in all forms of fusion.

If you know me, you know that I'm a fan of burns and bootlegs. My personal collection is always getting jewel case covers because art is fucking cool.

Download some porn, paintshop or photoshop it, print it, trim it, stick it in the case, and get rid of the file so you only have one of a kind CDR covers.

I became sad when the full sized CD cases were no longer standard on the shelves. Yes they still exist, and yes I still buy them for my personal collections and pass-alongs, (don't give me yer shit if you don't want other people hearing it) but it's sad when CDR art is limited to one side of the CDR. SURROUND you collections and pass-alongs with CREATIVITY.

Sindrone speaks of impressions,.. and sindrone is right. Do you have a favorite packageing?

My favorites were all of Slayers covers, All of Skinny Puppy's covers, and all of the Pink Floyd covers. And then there's the Box sets that get creative at times.

Love yer package!
